How to Measure For Window Blinds

Get the Right Equipment

Measuring for your blinds is simple, all you’ll need are:

• A measuring tape, preferably steel for accuracy
• A stepladder
• A Pencil and paper

Inside-Fitting Blinds

Windows with a deep recess can have an inside-fitting blind installed, ideal for a neat and trim finish.

To measure for these blinds, ensure there aren’t any obstructions like curtains getting in the way. Then take three measurements of the window recess, at the top, middle and bottom of it, noting each. Use the smallest of these three measurements and to the nearest millimetre.

Another three measurements should be taken for the height of the recess, first on the left, then in the centre, and finally on the right, taking the smallest of the three as your measure of the recess.

Ensure that all measurements are taken on the inside of the recess, rather than on its outer edges.

Outside-Fitting Blinds

An outside-fitting blind sits outside of your window’s recess, so it’s ideal if your window has a very small recess or none at all. Usually, an outside-fitting blind will extend between 4 and 8 centimetres (1½ to 3 inches) over the window. You’ll need to measure from here to between 5 and 10 centimetres (2 to 4 inches) below the window itself, as this is where the blind will have to extend to. Likewise, there should be between 5 and 10 cm leeway on the sides, too.
